Happy 17th birthday, Maile!

Dancin' Queen, Young and Sweet, Only 17 . . .

Maile loves a surprise, and she especially loves time with her friends.  It's always a little tricky to schedule something that involves secrecy and lies, but we managed to pull it off!  Maile enjoyed a fun evening of singing karaoke with several of her dear friends. She was feeling hoarse the next day, but it was worth it!

(I missed the surprise moment since I was looking outside for her to arrive when I suddenly heard others in the room say, "Surprise!" Oops.)

Her actual birthday fell on a school day, so it was a quick morning of crepes, after a sleepover with her bestie, and then a regular school day with a sushi dinner and dance team tryouts!

Dear Maile,
More than ever, just thinking about you and how much you've grown brings tears to our eyes.  We always say that you are truly a cool human, and it stands true today. There's definitely something in the air with so many references to what happens "after high school." We want you to know that we are proud of you for who you are day in and day out, and we will always be your parents who love you unconditionally. It's okay to have dreams and goals and also just be happy living in the moment and not thinking about what comes next every single day. You work so hard in school, in dance, and in building the most incredible relationships with others. We love learning from you and watching you soar. This year has brought some of the biggest challenges you've ever had, and you have faced them with incredible grace and strength.  We love you so very much.

At the age of 17, you are someone who:
    • loves music - and somehow knows songs across genres and decades
    • loves people - connecting with others fills your bucket
    • is an academic achiever
    • loves sushi, pho, and steak (still after all these years), plus Caesar salad (dairy and gluten free currently)
    • is a lover of dance - taking it all in - competing, performing, researching, learning, striving, even when on the sidelines with a serious injury
    • is an amazing teammate who cares so deeply about the team as a whole
    • is a talented writer - both in storytelling and in your heartfelt notes to others
    • loves the freedom of driving
    • has started to explore the world of choreography
    • watches a bit of reality tv with her mom
    • has a younger sister who idolizes her
    • has a brain for numbers, but a heart for the arts
    • is a president-elect of APISU (way to represent!)
    • was recently elected as ASB of Film and Promotion for 24-25, placing you on the Exec Board
    • is a familiar face to many due to those Mav TV productions
    • enjoys photography, and now people more often than nature
    • is exploring the ideas of what life after high school might look like
    • has accomplished so much and still has so much to look forward to in the future!
We love you forever.
Mom and Dad
