Happy 18th Birthday, Maile!

 Guest Blogger: Mom

For Maile's 18th birthday, she and three of her dearest friends took a trip on their own to Palm Desert where they had a great time with sun, food, games, and each other's company. This was such a sign of growing up! For the family birthday dinner at home, Maile requested a salmon dinner, and we had her favorite white chocolate raspberry cake from Nothing Bundt Cakes.

Dear Maile,

How are we here?! Wasn't it yesterday that you were a tiny, little thing - swaddled in a bundle from chin to toes? These 18 years have been filled with so many moments to celebrate, moments to overcome, tons of learning, and all the love. Our journey as your parents will never end. We just get to take more of a backseat now and enjoy the ride that you choose to navigate. You've prepared and are more than ready to take the wheel. We will still be alongside - cheering you on all the way.

This past year has been filled to the brim with all the senior things - somehow being the fastest and slowest goodbye to your K-12 education.  We are so proud of you and can't wait for what's to come!

We love you! Happy birthday, Maile!

At the age of 18, you are someone who:
  • still loves music - enjoying records and so many different Spotify playlists
  • enjoys going to conferences - DCON, Leadership, LEAP, etc.
  • has maintained a 4.0 unweighted GPA throughout high school, including IB and college courses
  • has a social justice and equity-focused mind
  • enjoys traveling solo and with others
  • still very much enjoys pho, sushi, and steak, plus Caesar salad, and soup dumplings
  • enjoys some sweets, but not going overboard -a good balance of a Crumbl cookie here and there with Midday Squares and Skinny Cups to balance it out
  • prefers gold over silver jewelry and especially loves rings
  • survived a difficult year of not being able to compete in dance - just barely getting to do a bit of performing with your team after an entire year of sitting out
  • has completed countless hours of physical therapy to support the healing from two knee surgeries in the past year
  • won an award for the Best High School Music Video in a district-wide Signal to Noise competition for End Credits
  • was just hired as a junior counselor to return to LEAP for a second summer
  • started another new job this past year at THPRD
  • likes to binge watch old shows and rewatch movies that were loved as a child (Madagascar 3!)
  • is a great big sister to one who looks up to you so much
  • was involved with school this year in multiple capacities - from APISU to HERD to Leadership to Dance team and more
  • brings joy to other's faces with your filmmaking and video productions
  • brought out the best in others via their senior photo shoots
  • is about to finish off the school year by being the student speaker at commencement
  • received a full tuition scholarship because of your amazing academics, writing, and extra-curriculars
  • received additional scholarships for your writing, academics, and commitment to diversity
  • is about to live out the dream of moving to NYC - but not before we take a family trip to Vietnam!
We are so lucky to be your parents.
Love,
Mom and Dad
